This painting tells the story of the ‘Wild Goose’, a Celtic myth where the wildness of an untamed goose embodies the fierce, free and unpredictable nature of the Holy Spirit. I love that the Goose has enormous wings, and also I imagine the loud honking sound it makes: it is full of energy and daring. I wanted to capture this energy in my painting. It is interesting to me, as I reflect on it, how the girl is in a boat. She could be seen as safe and protected or launched out into the unknown waters of life.. It is said that early Celtic believers would cast their boats on the water after fasting and praying, believing that the wind of the Spirit would take them wherever they needed to go.
